Beautiful, beguiling, and ensconced in charm – this is the city of Myrtle Beach and none of its facets embody these qualities better than its golf courses. Golf enthusiasts from all over the world gather at this coastal beauty to challenge their skills and unwind amidst natural grandeur. Myrtle Beach isn’t just about long sandy beaches and oceanic wonders, it’s also famous for being the Golf Capital of the World.
True to this title, Myrtle Beach flaunts more than 80 golf courses, each one distinguished with distinctive layouts, varying difficulty levels, and elegant sea views. Leafy boulevards, grand panoramic views of the sea, and world-class services mark these courses, standing testament to their global appeal.
Local Golf with Coastal Grandeur
Our first glimpse of coastal golf grandeur comes with the Dunes Golf and Beach Club. Fondly known as the Granddaddy of local golf clubs, it was established in 1948. As the name suggests, it’s not just the golf course that entices visitors, but also the stunning beach vistas that surround it. This 18-hole championship course designed by renowned architect Robert Trent Jones is the only one in the area having ocean views from the clubhouse.
Next in line is the magnificent Tidewater Golf Club, often recognized as one of the best public golf courses in America. Seamlessly wedded to the surrounding marshlands and the Cherry Grove, this course provides a winning blend of challenging play, scenic allure, and mesmerizing views of the Atlantic Ocean.
Then we have the Grande Dunes Resort Course, a shining gem of the Intracoastal Waterway. The resort course elevates your golfing experience with stretches of fairways, shot-making opportunities, and a stunning 15th hole on a bluff with a backdrop of the Intracoastal Waterway.
Championship Haven
Alongside visual grandeur, Myrtle Beach courses have become beacons of championship play. The Dunes Club has hosted numerous prestigious tournaments, including the Senior PGA Tour Championship and the PGA Professional National Championship.
Other notable courses have also contributed to the championship heritage. The Pine Lakes Country Club, known as the birthplace of Sports Illustrated, has hosted several Southern Amateur Championships. Turtle Point Course at Kiawah Island, a regular on Golf Digest’s Top 100 Public Golf Courses, hosted the 1990 PGA Championship won by Wayne Grady.
Unrivalled Experiences
Beyond the fairways, these golf courses amplify your experience with a versatile range of services. Most clubs offer well-maintained locker rooms, clubs and carts for rent, and pro-shops for all your golfing essentials. Many offer coaching sessions, from beginners to advanced players, under the guidance of PGA professionals.
Enhance your golf experiences with culinary excellence at the clubhouses, ranging from casual quick bites to fine dining options. Not to forget the beautiful oceanic backdrop, making your post-play relaxation a unique affair.
Golf Packages: Value at its Best
A unique facet of Myrtle Beach golfing experience is the sheer variety of golf packages available. Tailored to different preferences and budgets, these packages include multiple rounds at various courses, lodging, dining, and often additional leisure activities. With value-packed deals, golfing in Myrtle Beach becomes twice as fulfilling.
In a Shell
With its fusion of golfing prowess, coastal charm, and Castle-quality services, Myrtle Beach has carved a unique niche in the world golf landscape. From professional players to enthusiastic amateurs, golf in Myrtle Beach offers unforgettable experiences. Next time you feel like teeing off with an ocean view, remember – the greens of Myrtle Beach await with open arms!
I’ve played at Myrtle Beach several times and it truly is something special. The views are stunning, the courses challenging but fair, and the overall vibe is super friendly. It’s definitely one of the best golf experiences available. Just make sure to reserve your tee times well in advance, particularly during the high season!
That 15th hole at the Grande Dunes Resort Course is indeed stunning! Hit my first hole in one there. So if you want to replicate the feat, my advice would be to aim left and let the wind do the rest ?
Great article but you missed mentioning Barefoot Resort and Golf. It’s hands down one of the best golfing experiences Myrtle Beach has to offer. Four championship courses designed by Norman, Love, Fazio, and Dye, with the bonus of being just minutes from the beautiful Atlantic Ocean.
Having stuck mostly to local country clubs, I’ve been considering a bit of a golf ‘vacation’. Myrtle Beach certainly provides a compelling argument. Can anyone suggest which course would be best for a relatively intermediate player? Best balance of challenge and enjoyment. Thanks!
